Fundraising Page for 2012 TELUS Walk-Vancouver
June 10, 2012 at Stanley Park-Lumberman's Arch
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of six and for the last 18 years I have been taking multiple daily injections along with handling the daily challenges this disease can bring. In my 18 years of diabetes, I have taken over 30,000 insulin injections, countless finger pokes, bi-annually blood tests and exams.
Once diagnosed my family, like many, struggled for many years to cope with the financial pressure that comes with ensuring the tools needed to survive and be healthy, were available to me. Emotionally, Diabetes can be devastating to both the families and diabetics themselves as they ride the roller coaster of high points and low points of the disease.
Type 1 Diabetes affects children, teens and adults. It is currently not curable and only treatable with daily insulin injections along with regular testing of blood sugars. It can be diagnosed at any age, regardless of if the person is a newborn or 60 years old.
WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES:
- Type 1 diabetes is a non-preventable, autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. It strikes children and adults suddenly, leaving them dependent on injected or pumped insulin for life.
- It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, and is not preventable.
- Insulin is not a cure, nor does it prevent complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, and amputation.
- Globally, every ten seconds two people develop diabetes.
I am participating again this year in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes because I want to do my part to help other diabetics, like myself, live a healthier, happier and stress-free life.
Over 300,000 Canadians are Type 1 diabetics, they will struggle emotionally and financially at times whether they are new to the game or veterans. With your donation, together we can help JDRF ensure that diabetics in Canada and around the world are given a chance to live a more carefree life!
