Making a Difference One Stride at a Time …

On November 4, 2012, I will be running in the ING New York City Marathon to create awareness for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and raise vital funds that will help JDRF fund world-class T1D research.

T1D is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. T1D strikes both children and adults at any age. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of developing devastating complications. JDRF has an unrelenting passion and commitment to find better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people with this disease.

Several years ago, I met a young constituent, Rebecca Morrison from my riding. Rebecca explained to me how difficult it is for young Canadians living with T1D. Sydney Grace, another local Barrie youth, made a scrapbook for me about what living with T1D involves and how Canadians are challenged by it every day. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting another young constituent, Noah Stock and his dad Jay. Noah has shared with me what it is like to be a young child living with T1D. Noah is so young yet so eloquent that he inspires you to do more. Noah and I are working together to raise awareness for JDRF and T1D through the JDRF Family Outreach Skate, the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes and my annual Summer Barbeque.

Sydney, Rebecca and Noah have certainly made a strong case for why Canada can do more on the T1D research front. Their stories drive my commitment to raise awareness for T1D and their strength and courage are constant reminders to me to try and secure additional research funding on Parliament Hill in order to win this battle.
